The Learning Health System Summit [Overview]

The Joseph H. Kanter Family Foundation (KFF) convened a two-day Learning Health System (LHS) Summit on May 17 and 18 where over 80 prominent individuals representing organizations and stakeholders across the health care and health IT communities gathered at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Participants worked together to begin laying key foundational elements that promise to harmonize and coalesce cutting-edge work presently underway into a national-scale LHS.

Vision

With that concept at the core of its vision, KFF recognized that, just as patients can learn from one another’s health experiences, so to can nations learn from one another’s experiences in the healthcare arena. To this end, in 2010, KFF worked with The Commonwealth Fund and the Institute of Medicine to convene an international working meeting of healthcare, HIT, and health policy thought leaders from around the world. A key lesson learned is that no country has yet effectuated a patient-centered learning/teaching health system, although leaders virtually all recognize the value of such a...

Your Life, Your Health: There’s No App for That… YET

Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Or, as I sometimes see it as a self-made, serial entrepreneur turned prostate cancer survivor turned patient activist and philanthropist, the more the power of information technology (IT) changes just about everything else, the more the most frustrating and disempowering aspects of the patient experience remain virtually untouched. In an age where everyday people are connected to the Internet everywhere they go and leverage the power of IT to enhance every aspect of how they communicate, share, record, interact, learn, and decide, the time has come for patients to leverage that same power to transform the experience of being a patient; but that can only happen if the voices of the patients are heard loud and clear.

Name the Book and WIN $1,000!

Joe Kanter has finished a book that he will be publishing. We are searching for a name. The public, including some intelligent and well-known individuals, do not understand that the “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” is collecting actual data from millions of patients and evaluated by doctors, scientists, and researchers, to determine, scientifically, “what works best in every disease”. If you contribute a name that we select, you can win $1,000! We are considering:

As Many as 4 Out of 5 of Every Doctor’s Recommendations are… ANECDOTAL!

Seeing where electronic health records are moving, I envision a future where this technology has the power to provide any individual with the opportunity to use their personal computers to figure out exactly the recovery rate for rotator cuff or prostate or intestinal surgery for their age group, as well as the potential for complications – including anesthesia-related deaths. They could also determine the outcomes for physical therapy for their particular age group.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness… And Health…

In drafting our nation’s Declaration of Independence, our Founding Fathers proffered the fundamental notion that every human being is entitled to the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The concept of self-defense in certain respects fits with this notion; when an individual attacks us unprovoked, he is threatening our life, our liberty, and our pursuit of happiness, and each of us in turn has an inherent right to fight back.

In the weeks prior to the August recess, Congress worked diligently to address a variety of health care issues, including reforming Medicare and expanding access to our nation’s health care system. While these issues are certainly vital, we must not overlook the importance of another aspect of health care reform, which is actually improving the quality of health care services being delivered. One way to do this is to improve the information available to our doctors…
